शृङ्गार

शृङ्गार  m. m. (prob. connected with शृङ्ग as वृन्दार with वृन्द) love (as ‘the horned’ or ‘the strong one’ ?), sexual passion or desire or enjoyment, [Kāv.] ; [Rājat.] &c.
सम्भोग   (in rhet.) the erotic sentiment (one of the 8 or 10 रसs q.v.; it has विष्णु for its tutelary deity and black for its colour; accord. to most authorities it is of two kinds, other words. From Latin videlicet">viz., ‘mutual enjoyment’, and विप्रलम्भ, ‘deception, disappointment’, to which by some is added as third अ-योग, ‘separation’), [Bhar.] ; [Daśar.] ; [Sāh.] &c.
   a dress suitable for amorous purposes, elegant dress, fine garments, finery, [Kāv.] ; [Pañcat.] ; [Kathās.] &c.

   The sentiment of love or sexual passion, the erotic sentiment (the first of the eight or nine sentiments in poetical compositions; it is of two kinds: संभोगशृङ्गार and विप्रलम्भशृङ्गार q. q. v. v.); शृङ्गारः सखि मूर्तिमानिव मधौ मुग्धो हरिः क्रीडति [Gīt.1;] (it is thus defined: पुंसः स्त्रियां स्त्रियाः पुंसि संभोगं प्रति या स्पृहा । स शृङ्गार इति ख्यातः क्रीडारत्यादिकारकः ॥ see [S. D.21] also).
   love, passion, sexual love; शृङ्गारैकरसः स्वयं नु मदनो मासो नु पुष्पाकरः [V.1.1.]
