MUNI I   The mother of the Yakṣas. It is stated that Kaśyapaprajāpati begot of his wife Muni, the Yakṣas. [Chapter 19, Agni Purāṇa] . The Gandharvas also were born of Muni. She gave birth to sixteen Gandharvas of which the first was named Bhīmasena. [Śloka 42, Chapter 65, Ādi Parva] .
MUNI II   Son of a Vasu named Ahar (i.e. Ahaḥ) [Śloka 23, Chapter 66, Ādi Parva] .
MUNI III   Son of Kuru of the Pūru line of kings. Kuru begot of his wife Vāhinī five sons named Aśvavān, Abhiṣyanta, Caitraratha, Janamejaya and Muni. [Śloka 50, Chapter 94, Ādi Parva] .
MUNI IV   One of the seven sons of a King named Dyutimān. [Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa 5. 24] .

प्राचीन चरित्रकोश

मुनि n.  कश्यप ऋषि की पत्नी, जो प्राचेतस दक्ष प्रजापति की कन्या थी । इसकी माता का नामा असिक्नी था । इसे कश्यप ऋषि से भीमसेन आदि सोलह देवगंधर्व पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए थे [म.आ.५९.४१-४३] ; कश्यप देखिये ।
मुनि II. n.  अहन् नामक वसु का एक पुत्र [म.आ.६७.२३] ।
मुनि III. n.  (सो.पूरु.) कुरु राजा के पॉंच पुत्रों में से एक, जिसकी माता का नाम वाहिनी था । इसे निम्नलिखित चार भाई थेः--अश्ववान्, अभिष्यन्त, चैत्ररथ एवं जनमेजय [म.आ.८८.५०] ।

मुनि XI. n.  १. एक ऋषिविशेष । महाभारत एवं पुराणों में ऋषि एवं मुनियों का निर्देश अनेक बार आता है, उनमें से ‘मुनि’ शब्द की व्याख्या महाभारत में इसप्रकार दी गयी हैः--- मौनाद्धि स मुनिर्भवति, नारण्यवसनान्मुनिः। [म.उ.४३.३५] । (कोई भी साधक मौनव्रत पालन करने से मुनि बनता है, केवल वन में रहने से नही) । उपनिषदों के अनुसार, अध्ययन, यज्ञ, व्रत एवं श्रद्धा से जो ब्रह्म का ज्ञान प्राप्त करता है, उसे मुनि कहा गया है [बृ.उ.३.४.१,४.४.२५] ; [तै.आ.२.२०] । सन्तान एवं दक्षिणा की प्राप्ति आदि पार्थिव विचारों का आचरण करनेवाले व्यक्तियों को प्राचीन ग्रंथों में पुरोहित कहा गया है ।
