Merit and demerit during some former stage of existence considered as constituting the occasion of the present birth, and as regulating the allotment to it of physical good and evil:--thus answering both to Fortune or destiny as the appointer and to fortune or fortunes as one's portion appointed. प्रारब्ध is distinguished into संचितप्रारब्ध & क्रियमाणप्रारब्ध Fortunes as determined by one's deeds in a former birth, and fortunes as resulting from the deeds of the present. Sanskrit adage. प्रारब्धकर्मणांभोगादेवक्षयः Done deeds pass away only on being reaped; i.e. "every deed shall have its recompense of reward." Ec- cles. xii. 14. प्रारब्ध is also distinguished into अनिच्छाप्रारब्ध, परेच्छाप्रारब्ध, स्वेच्छाप्रारब्ध q.v. in loc.
