PUṢKALA I   A valiant soldier who fought on the side of Rāvaṇa. Hanūmān fought against this soldier fiercely. [Bhāga 2, Padma Purāṇa] .
PUṢKALA II   The youngest son of Bharata, son of Daśaratha. Māṇḍavī was the mother of Puṣkala. [Chapter 88, Vāyu Purāṇa] ; [Chapter 6, Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa] ; [Chapter 4, Viṣṇu Purāṇa] ; [Chapter 11, Agni Purāṇa] . details available about Puṣkala from Padma Purāṇa and Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa are the following:
(1) Puṣkala was with Śatrughna when the latter served as the guardian of the horse in all the three aśvamedhayāgas conducted by Śrī Rāma. [Padma Purāṇa, Pātāla Khaṇḍa, Chapters 1 and 22] .
(2) he defeated Damana, son of Subāhu, while he was following the sacrificial horse. [Padma Purāṇa, Pātāla Khaṇḍa, Chapter 34] .
(3) he fought fiercely against the demons, Vidyunmālī and Ugradaṁṣṭra. [Padma Purāṇa. Pātāla Khaṇḍa, Chapter 34] .
(4) he fought against Rukmāṅgada and Vīramaṇi. [Padma Purāṇa, Pātāla Khaṇḍa, Chapter 41] .
(5) he was defeated by lava who checked the progress of the sacrificial horse. [Padma Purāṇa, Pātāla Khaṇḍa, Chapter 61] .
(6) Puṣkala conquered the country of Gāndhāra and built there a city called Puṣkalāvatī alias Puṣkalāvata and made it his capital city. [Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Uttara Kāṇḍa] .

पुष्कल n.  ( सू. इ.) एक इक्ष्वाकुवंशीय राजा, जो दशरथपुत्र भरत के दो पुत्रों में से कनिष्ठ था । इसकी माता का नाम मांडवी था [वायु.८८] ; [ब्रह्मांड.३.६३.१९०] ; [विष्णु.४.४७] ; [अग्नि११.७-८,९,११-१२] । पद्म पुराण के पातालखंड में, राम दाशरथि के अश्वमेध यज्ञ का विस्तृत वर्णन प्राप्त हैं, जिससे इसकी शूरता की प्रचीति मिलती है [पद्म. पा.१-६८] । राम दाशरथि ने कुल तीन अश्वमेध यज्ञ किये । उन तीनों यज्ञ के समय, अश्व की रक्षा करने का काम शत्रुघ्न के साथ पुष्कल ने ही निभाया था [पद्म.पा.१.११०] इस कार्य में अनेक राक्षस एवं वीरों से इसे सामना करना पडा । सुबाहुपुत्र दमन को इसने परास्त किया [पद्म.पा.२६] । चित्रांग के साथ हुए युद्ध में, लिसने उसका वध किया [पद्म. पा.२७] । विद्युन्माली एवं उग्रदंष्ट्र राक्षसों से इसका भीषण युद्ध हुआ [पद्म.पा.३४] । रुक्मांगद एवं वीरमणि से भी इसका युद्ध हुआ था [पद्म.पा४१-४६] । अंत में लव ने राम का अश्वमेधीय अश्व रोक करा इसे पराजित किया [पद्म. पा.६१] । वाल्मिकी रामायण के अनुसार, पुष्कल ने गांधार देश जीत कर, उस देश में पुष्कलावती अथवा पुष्कलावत नामक नगरी की स्थापना की, एवं उसे अपनी राजधानी बनायी --- 11--- । पद्म के अनुसर इसकी पत्नी का नाम कांतिमती था [पद्म.पा.६७] ।
पुष्कल II. n.  ( सू.इ.भविष्य.) एक इक्ष्वाकुवंशीय राजा मत्स्य कें अनुसार, यह शुद्धोदन राजा का पुत्र था । इसे सिद्धार्थ नामान्तर प्राप्त है [मत्स्य., २७२, १२] ; सिद्धार्थ देखिये । इसे ‘ राहुल’, ‘ रातुल’ एवं ‘ लांगलिन्’ नामांतर भी प्राप्त थे ।
