UDDĀLAKA I   A disciple called Āruṇi of the teacher Āyodhadhaumya. To know how Āruṇi got the name Uddālaka, see under Āyodhadhaumya. it is stated in [Mahābhārata, Sabhā Parva, Chapter 7, Stanza 12] that this hermit Uddālaka was a prominent figure in the durbar of indra. Uddālaka had a son called Śvetaketu and a daughter called Sujātā. he gave his daughter Sujātā in marriage to his favourite disciple Kahoḍaka. The hermit Aṣṭāvakra was their son. see under Aṣṭāvakra. [M.B. Vana Parva, Chapter 132] . once Uddālaka caused the river Sarasvatī to appear at the place of sacrifice. From that day onwards Sarasvatī got the name ‘Manoramā’ because when the thought came to his mind (manas) the river made its appearance. [M.B. Śalya Parva, Chapter 33] . it is mentioned in [Mahābhārata, Śānti Parva, Chapter 57, Stanza 10] , that Uddālaka expelled his son Śvetaketu from the house because the son was a hater of Brahmins.
UDDĀLAKA II   The story of another hermit of the name Uddālaka is mentioned in the [Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva. Chapter 71] . this hermit is known as Uddālaki also. once this hermit happened to forget that he had left flowers, food and his waterpot on the bank of the river and reaching his hermitage, he asked his son Nāciketa to fetch them from the bank of the river. When Nāciketa reached the bank of the river, those things had been washed down by the current. The son returned and reported the matter to his father. The father got angry and cursed his son to death. seeing the son lying dead on darbha ( mattress made of darbha grass) the hermit cried aloud. In that flow of tears life returned to the body and the son woke up as if from sleep. The father asked the son about the news of the realm of yama (the god of death) and the son told the hermit the news about the world of the dead.

उद्दालक n.   एक आचार्य । आपोद धौम्य का शिष्य । एक समय इसे गुरु ने पानी ( खेत का )रोकने के लिये कहा; पर इसे पानी को रोकते नहीं बन रहा था । तब इसने खुद ही नीचे सो कर पानी रोका । गुरु को खोज करते समय यह पता लगा । तब उन्होंने आरुणि पांचाल्य का नाम उद्दालक रखा [म.आ.३.२०-२९] । इसे कुशिक की कन्या से श्वेतकेतु और नचिकेतस् दो पुत्र तथा सुजाता नामक पुत्री उत्पन्न हुई । सुजाता कहोल को व्याही गयी थी । इसका पुत्र अष्टावक्र था [म. व.१३२] । एक निपुत्रिक ब्राह्मण ने इसकी स्त्री पुत्रोत्पादनार्थ मांगी । श्वेतकेतु को यह सहन न होने के कारण उसने नियम बनाया कि, स्त्री को केवल एक ही पति होना चाहिये [म. आ.११३] । इस में सत्तासामान्य नामक दिव्यदृष्टि निर्माण हुई थी; इस कारण यह हमेशा समाधिसुख में रहता था । इसका शरीर सूर्य किरणों से शुष्क हो कर यह ब्रह्मरुप हुआ । इसका शव चामुंडा देवी ने खड्‌ग तथा खट्‌वांग में भूषण के समान धारण किया [यो. वा.५.५१-५६] ; चंडी देखिये ।
उद्दालक ( आरुणि) n.   अध्यात्मविद्या का प्रसिद्ध आचार्य । यह अरुण औपवेशि गौतम पुत्र तथा शिष्य था [बृ. उ.६.५.३] । इसका पुत्र श्वेतकेतु [बृ. उ.६.२.१] ; [छां. उ.६.१.१] । पतंचल काप्य इसका गुरु था । इसने याज्ञवल्क्य को अध्यात्म संबंधी कुछ प्रश्न पूछे । याज्ञवल्क्य ने जिनके उत्तर विस्तृत रुप से दे उसे चुप कर दिया [बृ. उ.३.७] । एक याज्ञवल्क्य इसका शिष्य भी था [बृ. उ.६.५.३] । इसकी ब्रह्मविद्या की परंपरा ब्रह्मा से है । इसे इसके पिता से ही ब्रह्मविद्या मिली थी [छां. उ.३.११.४] । बडे बडे ज्ञानी लोग भी अध्यात्मविद्या संपादनार्थ इसके पास आते थे । इंद्रद्युम्न, सत्ययज्ञ, जन तथा बुडिल इसके पास अध्यात्मविद्या सीखने के लिये आये थे --- 10--- । इसके कुल के मनुष्य विद्वान् थे ऐसी उस समय ख्याति थी । इसने श्वेतकेतु को सिखाया हुआ तत्त्वज्ञान प्रसिद्ध है [छां. उ.६.१] ; श्वेतकेतु देखिये । इसका उल्लेख अन्यत्र भी आता है । राज्याभिषेक के समय कहे जाने वाले मंत्रों के संबंध में इसका मत सर्वमान्य है --- 12--- ।
