उप-सर्जन  mfn. n. (compound.*">ifc.neuter, or adjective" type="hwifc">mf()n.) the act of pouring upon, KātyŚr.

   anything or any person subordinate to another, [Mn.]
   a substitute, representation, [Nyāyam.] &c.
प्रधान   (in gr.) ‘subordinate, secondary’ (opposed to ), any word which by composition or derivation loses its original independence while it also determines the sense of another word (e.g. the word राजन् in राजपुरुष, ‘a king's servant or minister’, and the word अपिशलि in आपिशल, 43, &c.; 6-2, 36">[Pāṇ. 1-2, 43, &c.; 6-2, 36] ; in a बहु-व्रीहि compound both members are उपसर्जन; in other compounds generally the first member, [Pāṇ. 2-2, 30] ; for exceptions see, [Pāṇ. 2-2, 31] )

   1. A representative, a substitute, any person or thing subordinate or subsidiary.
   2. portent, eclipse.
   3. approaching.
   E. उप inferior, सृज् to go, ल्युट् aff. In the first sense, though used as an attributive, it is always neuter.
