The Visarga or soft aspirate, marked by two perpendicular dots, thus: It occurs after a vowel, or after the inherent short vowel अ in consonants, when क, ख, प, फ, श, ष, or स follows; or it marks the pause. It occurs too as the substitute for the letters स & र the terminations of various inflections both of nouns and of verbs. 2 Abandonment, relinquishment, quitting or giving up generally.
