caudāratnēṃ n pl The fourteen precious things obtained from the ocean on churning it; viz. लक्ष्मी, कौस्तुभ, पारिजातक, सुरा, धन्वंतरी, चंद्र, कामधेनु ऐरावत, अप्सरा, सप्तमुखी अश्व, विष, हरिधनु, शंख, अमृत. Because this last occasioned the gods and demons to fight; or because of a misreading of the last word of the line शंखोमृतं चांबुधे: into चाबूक a whip; चौदावें रत्न is employed to signify A sound flogging or beating: also any rough trick played off upon a simpleton.
