शौनकः [śaunakḥ] N. N. of a great sage, the reputed author of the Ṛigveda Prātiśākhya and various other Vedic compositions.

शौनक n. एक शाखाप्रवर्तक आचार्य, जो विष्णु, वायु एवं ब्रह्मांड के अनुसार, व्यास की अथर्वन्शिष्यपरंपरा में से पथ्य नामक आचार्य का शिष्य था (व्यास एवं पाणिनि देखिये) । इसे भृगुकुल का मंत्रकार भी कहा गया है ।

patr. fr. शुनकg. बिदा-दि) N. of various authors and teachers (also with इन्द्रोत and स्वैदायन; esp. of the celebrated grammarian, author of the ऋग्-वेदप्रातिशाख्य, the बृहद्-देवता, and various other works; he is described as the teacher of कात्यायन and especially of आश्वलायन; he is said to have united the बाष्कल and शाकलशाखाs, and is sometimes identified with the Vedic ऋषिगृत्स-मद; but according to the विष्णु-पुराण, Ś° was a son of गृत्समद, and originated the system of four castes; he is quoted in [ĀśvŚr.] ; [APrāt.] and, [VPrāt.] ; the various legends about him are very confused), [ŚBr.] ; [Up.] ; [MBh.] &c.
