nāyakacatuṣṭaya n S The four classes of Heroes, the objects of dramatory representation or poetical description; the subjects of a ग्रंथ or composition; viz. धीरोदात्त, धीरोद्धत, धीरललित, धीरशांत. The नायक or Hero is represented generally as an aspirant after or exemplar of यश, प्रताप, धर्म, काम, अर्थ &c. i. e. Power, honor, or glory, of Valor or prowess, of Religion or piety, of Pleasure or sensuous gratification, of Riches or wealth &c. See चतुष्टय.
