ATHARVA(M) Among the Vedas, this has the fourth place. It comprises different kinds of incantations of occult powers for the destruction of enemies. Atharvan the son of Vasiс╣гс╣нha was the author of this Veda. In [Chapter 6 of the third section of Viс╣гс╣Зu Pur─Бс╣Зa] the following reference is made to Atharvaveda: тАЬSumantu Maharс╣гi who was of infinite glory, first taught this Atharvaveda to his disciple Kabandha. (Sumantu Maharс╣гi was the son of Jaimini, who was the disciple of Vedavy─Бsa). Kabandha divided Atharvaveda into two parts and communicated them to two Maharс╣гis named Devadar┼Ыa and Pathya. Devadar┼Ыa's disciples were: Medh─Б, Brahmabali, ┼Ъautk─Бyani and Pippal─Бda. Pathya had three disciples named J─Бb─Бli, Kumud─Бdi and ┼Ъaunaka. They also made Atharvaveda compilations. ┼Ъaunaka divided his compilation into two and gave one part to Babhru and the other to Saindhava. Mu├▒jike┼Ыa learnt it from Saindhava and divided the compilation first into two and later into three parts. The five divisions of the Atharvaveda--Nakс╣гatrakalpa, Vedakalpa, Saс╣Бhit─Бkalpa, ─Ас╣Еgirasakalpa and ┼Ъ─Бntikalpa, were made by Mu├▒jike┼Ыa. Nakс╣гatrakalpa contains Brahma's works: Saс╣Бhit─Бkalpa contains Mantra Vidhi; ─Аngirasakalpa contains ─Бbhic─Бra and ┼Ъ─Бntikalpa contains taming of horses, elephants etc. The mantras (incantations) in [Atharvaveda] and their uses are given below:--
