indriya n S A sense, a faculty or power by which external objects are perceived: also an organ or a member, a natural instrument by or through which action is performed. Ten are enumerated, viz. त्वगिंद्रिय, चक्षुरिंद्रिय, श्रोत्रेंद्रिय, रसनेंद्रिय, घ्राणेंद्रिय. These are called ज्ञानेंद्रिय The five senses. वागिंद्रिय, हस्तेंद्रिय, पादेंद्रिय, गुदेंद्रिय, उपस्थेंद्रिय. These are called कर्मेंद्रिय The organs and members of action. To these ten some add मन The mind. N.B. इं0 signifies, throughout these ten, both the percipient or sensitive principle inherent, and the organ or apparatus by or through which it manifests itself and acts. Another classification is into ज्ञानेंद्रिय. कर्मेंद्रिय, अंतरिंद्रिय Organs of sense or perception, Organs of action, Internal organs. The first are Eye, ear, nose, tongue, skin: the second, Larynx or organ of speech, hand, foot, anus, parts of generation: the third मन, बुद्धि, चित्त, अहंकार q. v. under अंतःकरणचतुष्टय. Some useful compounds are formed with this word; as इंद्रियदमन, इंद्रियनिग्रह, इंद्रियनियम Subduing or restraining the senses and affections; इंद्रियपाटव Sharpness or soundness of the senses and organs; इंद्रियवैकल्य Disorder or derangement of the senses or organs; इंद्रियगोचर, इंद्रियविषय, इंद्रियवश, इंद्रियाधीन, इंद्रिय- जेता, इंद्रियनियामक, इंद्रियनिग्रही, इंद्रियतर्पण, इंद्रिय- पोषण, इंद्रियशमन, इंद्रियशांति. 2 Membrum virile vel pudendum muliebre. क्रोध असावा इंद्रियदमनीं ॥ लोभ असावा ईश्वर- भजनीं ॥ Let us have Anger, but--in subduing our senses and lusts: let us have Desire, but--in worshiping God. इं0 हातीं धरणें To be greatly addicted to fornication or wenching.
