DHANAPĀLA   A Vaiśya who lived in the city of Ayodhyā. He built in Ayodhyā a temple for the Sun-god and appointed, for a year, paying his wages in advance, a scholar well versed in Purāṇas to read aloud the Purāṇas in the temple. After six months Dhanapāla died and as a result of the goodness accrued to him by his worthy deeds the Sun-god came to him with his chariot and took him to his place and seating him on his seat paid respects to him. Later he was taken to Brahmaloka. [Bhaviṣya Purāṇa, Brahma Kāṇḍa, Chapter 94] .

धनपाल n.  अयोध्या नगरी का एक वैश्य । इसने सूर्य का एक दिव्य मंदिर बनवाया । एक पुराणिक को एक पूरे साल का वेतन दे कर, वहॉं पुराणपठन के लिये कहा । बाद में छः मास में ही इसकी मृत्यु हो गई । इसके संचित पुण्य के कारण, सूर्य ने विमान से इसे ले जा कर अपने आसन पर बिठाया, इसकी पूजा करवाई । पश्चात् इसे ब्रह्मलोक में पहुँचाया [भवि. ब्राह्म.९४] ।
धनपाल II. n.  (सो.) भविष्यमत में सावित्री का पुत्र । इसने ३००० वर्षों तक राज्य किया ।
धनपाल III. n.  सरस्वती के तट पर भद्रावती नगर में रहनेवाला एक वैश्य । इसे धृष्टबुद्धि नामक दुर्वर्तनी पुत्र था (धृष्टबुद्धि देखिये) ।
