after a long time, slowly, [RV. v, 56, 7 & 79, 9] ; [AitBr. i, 16] ; [Kathās. iv, 31]

चिरम्   ind. A long time.
E. चिर् to injure, and affix: वा रमुक् . this word, and others evidently derived from it, are now considered as particles, and have accordingly appropriate, though strained ety- mologies; the derivatives however corresponding with the inflec- tions of the singular number of nouns masculine or neuter, it may have been originally an imperfect noun of the 1st declension, thus; nom. चिरः or चिरं acc. चिरं 1st abl. चिरेण dat. चिराय, 2nd abl. चिरात्, gen. चिरस्य, 3rd abl. चिरे; see these words severally.
