KUMĀRA I   Skanda or Subrahmaṇya. [For details see under Skanda] .
KUMĀRA II   A King in ancient India. He was invited by the Pāṇḍavas to help them in the great war. He was defeated by Droṇa. [Udyoga Parva, Chapter 4, Verse 24] .
KUMĀRA III   A sage reputed as Sanatkumāra. (For details see under Sanatkumāra).
KUMĀRA IV   One of the prominent sons of Garuḍa.
KUMĀRA V   An urban region in ancient India. King Śreṇimān of Kumāra was defeated by Bhīma during his triumphal tour. [Sabhā Parva, Chapter 30, Verse 1] .
KUMĀRA(S)   Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatkumāra and Sanatsujāta were the sons of Brahmā endowed with eternal youthfulness. They are known as the Kumāras.

प्राचीन चरित्रकोश

कुमार n.  ब्रह्मदेव का मानसपुत्र तथा प्रजापति [वायु ६६.५३] । वायुपुराण में, ब्रह्मदेव के सनक, सनंद, सनातन तथा सनत्कुमार इन पुत्रों के लिये कुमार नाम की योजना की गई है । ये ब्रह्ममानसपुत्र सर्वदा पांच छः वर्ष के बालकों के समान दीखते है । इसी लिये इन्हें कुमार कहा गया है । यह अपने भ्राताओं सहवर्तमान जब वैकुंठ गया था, तब द्वारपालों ने इसे प्रतिबंध किया । इसलिये इसने उन्हें शाप दिया [भा. ७.१.३७] । इसने सांख्यायन को भागवत कथन किया [भा.३.८.७] ।

कुमार (हैहय) n.  एक राजा । एक बार मृग समझ कर इसने एक ऋषिपुत्र का वध किया । तब इसे अत्यंत पश्वात्ताप हुआ । वह ऋषिपुत्र कौन होगा, उसकी इसने खोज की । खोजतेखोजते यह अरिष्टनेमि तार्क्ष्य के आश्रम में गया, तथा उन्हें वंदन कर नीचे बैठा । इतने में मारा गया हुआ ऋषिपुत्र वहॉं आया । उसे देख कर राजा को आश्चर्य हुआ । यह ऋषि से कुछ पूछने ही वाला था कि, ऋषि ने कहा, हे राजा, तुम आश्चर्य मत करो । हमलोग तपोबल से इच्छामरणी बन चुके है । इसलिये, तुम्हारे हाथों ब्रह्महत्या हुई, ऐसी शंका मन में मत लाओं । इतना सुन कर यह अपने नगर में गया [म.व.१८२] । यह हैहय नाम से प्रसिद्ध है, लेकिन वंशावलि में अप्राप्य है ।
कुमार (हारित) n.  गालव का शिष्य । इसका शिष्य कैशोर्य काप्य [बृ. उ.२.६.३,४.६.३] । रेत का महत्त्व वर्णन करते समय बताई गई आचार्यपरंपरा में, इसका नाम है [बृ. उ.६.४.४] ।
