मातृ f. 1.m. (for 2.मातृ॑f. (w.r. for ?) of an author, [Bṛh.] मातृ f. 2.f. (derivation from √ 3.मा very doubtful; for 1.मा॑तृ See p. 804, col. 2) a mother, any mother (applicable to animals), [RV.] &c. &c. (sometimes ifc. e.g. कुन्ती-म्°, having K° for a mother) मातरा-पितरा du. father and mother, parents, [RV. iii, 3, 33; vii, 2, 5] (also , iv, 6, 7, and पित॑रा-मात॑रा, [Pāṇ. 6-3, 33] ; cf. मातरपितरौ, col. 2) the earth (du. heaven and earth), [RV.] लोकस्य (with or scil. ), a cow, [MBh.] द्वि-म्° (du. and pl. ) the two pieces of wood used in kindling fire, [RV.] (cf. ) सप्तम्° (pl. ) the waters, [RV.] (cf. and, [Naigh. i, 13] ) लोकानाम् मातरः (pl. ) the divine mothers or personified energies of the principal deities (sometimes reckoned as 7 in number, viz. ब्राह्मी or ब्रह्माणी, माहेश्वरी, कौमारी, वैष्णवी, वाराही, इन्द्राणी or ऐन्द्री or माहेन्द्री, चामुण्डा; sometimes 8, viz. ब्राह्मि, माहेश्वरी, कौमारी, वैष्णवी, वाराही, रौद्री, चर्म-मुण्डा, काल-संकर्षिणी; sometimes 9, viz. ब्रह्माणी, वैष्णवी, रौद्री, वाराही, नारसिंहिका, कौमारी, माहेन्द्री, चामुण्डा, चण्डिका; sometimes 16, viz. गौरी, पद्मा, शची, मेधा, सावित्री, विजया, जया, देव-सेना, स्व-धा, स्वाहा, शान्ति, पुष्टि, धृति, तुष्टि, आत्म-देवता and कुल-देवता; they are closely connected with the worship of शिव and are described as attending on his son स्कन्द or कार्त्तिकेय, to whom at first only 7 मातृs were assigned, but later an innumerable number; also the 13 wives of कश्यप are called, ), [MBh.] ; [R.] ; [Pur.] ; [Hcat.] ([RTL. 222 &c.] ) (pl. ) the 8 classes of female ancestors (viz. mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, paternal and maternal aunts &c., [Saṃskārak.] ; but the word ‘mother’ is also applied to other female relatives and in familiar speech to elderly women generally) N. of लक्ष्मी, [Bhartṛ.] of दुर्गा, [L.] of दाक्षायणी in certain places, [Cat.] accord. to [L.] also = a colocynth Salvinia Cucullata, Nardostachys Jatamansi, Sphaerantus Indicus air, space the lower mill-stone विभूति = मातृ [cf.
